Benefits of Yoga

Yoga is the oldest defined practice of self development. The methods of yoga include ethical disciplines, physical postures, breathing control and meditation. Yoga is fast becoming popular in the West. Many people are starting to see the benefits of yoga, recognizing that they are becoming more relaxed, healthier and more creative.

Yoga derives its name from the word, “yoke” which means to bring together and yoga does just that. The practice of yoga brings together the mind, body and spirit, whether you use yoga for spiritual transformation or for stress management and physical well-being, the benefits are tremendous. Many of the techniques that yoga uses are controlled breathing, meditation, physical movement, mental imagery and stretching. All these things bring about reduced stress, sound sleep, spiritual growth, sense of well being, reduced anxiety, muscle tension, increased strength and flexibility, a slowed aging process and some people even see improvement of many medical conditions. Yoga’s gives a high payoff for the amount of effort involved; yoga is not rigorous and just about anyone can do it. The only drawback is that I can see is the commitment of time. Yes, to really benefit from yoga it does require time and is more difficult for people with certain physical limitations and some people feel self-conscious about some of the poses. Even if you don’t feel comfortable in a class setting you can benefit from doing yoga in your home by investing in a few yoga videos. Give yoga a chance and see how you can benefit and have less stress with practicing yoga.
